The Gornergrat railway
The ride
The Gornergrat railway is a cogwheel line that climbs from 1,604 m in the centre of Zermatt to 3,089 m. It opened in 1898, and its summit station is Europe’s highest open-air railway station. The valley station is directly opposite Zermatt railway station, which makes it the most convenient viewpoint for anyone arriving by train.
The line climbs through larch woods, past alpine meadows and small lakes, and onto the open ridge. For much of the way, the Matterhorn is in view, and the train stops at several intermediate stations on the way up.

From May 2025 to October 2026, the published fares from Zermatt are:

The intermediate stops are worth knowing about. They are cheaper, they have the Matterhorn in view, and they are the starting points for some of the finest walks in the area. A classic plan on a fine day is to ride to the summit, enjoy the view, and then walk down to one of the lower stations before taking the train back.
Buying Gornergrat tickets
You can buy at the station, but you do not need to queue. Tickets can be booked online at any time and scanned as a QR code at the gate, which avoids the ticket counter altogether. Two more things are worth knowing:
- Discounts for Swiss travelcards. Holders of the Swiss half-fare card and the GA travelcard get 50% off the Gornergrat railway, which makes a big difference to a CHF 132 return.
- Priority boarding. On busy days, priority boarding — a separate waiting area with preferential boarding — costs CHF 7 extra. It is worth considering in the peak of summer or if you are on a tight schedule.
The timetable
- From 20 April to 1 November 2026, trains run every 24 minutes from 08:00, with the first train from Zermatt at 07:00.
- The line is out of service from 2 to 14 November 2026 for construction work, with no alternative transport.
If you want the calmest time at the top, the early trains are the ones to aim for; if you want the Matterhorn in morning light, the first train is the one to catch.
The view
At the top, a viewing platform at 3,131 m looks straight across the valley to the Matterhorn. This is the view most people imagine when they think of the mountain: the whole pyramid, its east and north faces, and the Hörnli ridge running up towards the summit. Around you, the ridge overlooks a great sweep of glaciers and peaks, and the platform is open all year.
In winter
In winter, the Gornergrat is at the heart of the Zermatt ski area. The railway carries skiers as well as sightseers, and the view of the snow-covered Matterhorn from the ridge is one of the finest winter panoramas in the Alps.
Matterhorn Glacier Paradise
The ride
The cable car to Matterhorn Glacier Paradise takes you higher than anywhere else in the area: to 3,883 m, where the highest mountain station in Europe stands. Where the Gornergrat faces the Matterhorn across the valley, Glacier Paradise puts you among the glaciers right beside it.
The view
From the viewing platform at 3,883 m, you look out over 38 four-thousand-metre peaks and 14 glaciers in three countries. It is a wider, higher panorama than the Gornergrat’s, and a completely different angle on the Matterhorn: close, from the side, with the great ice fields of the border region around you.
The Glacier Palace
The Glacier Palace lies 15 m below the surface of the glacier. It is open all year, a visit takes 30 to 45 minutes, and warm clothing is recommended — you are inside the ice. It is one of the most memorable parts of a visit, especially for children.
The rest of the summit
Glacier Paradise also has the Cinema Lounge and the highest mountain restaurant in Europe, so there is enough to fill a morning even before you step onto the platform.
Summer skiing
Glacier Paradise keeps skiing going well into the warm months: summer skiing runs from 4 May to 31 October 2026. For sightseers that means company on the lifts, and a remarkable sight of people skiing on the glacier in the middle of summer.
A morning on each viewpoint, step by step
The Gornergrat
- Before you go: check the sky from the village. If the Matterhorn is clear, go now rather than later.
- At the station: cross from Zermatt station to the Gornergrat valley station directly opposite. Scan your online ticket at the gate.
- On the train: sit on the side with the Matterhorn in view, and watch for the intermediate stations — Riffelalp, Riffelberg and Rotenboden — on the way up.
- At the top: walk to the viewing platform at 3,131 m, take your time with the view, and warm up inside if the wind is strong.
- On the way down: if the weather is good and you are comfortable on mountain paths, walk down to one of the intermediate stations and catch the train from there.
Glacier Paradise
- Before you go: as with the Gornergrat, check the sky first. Cloud at 3,883 m hides everything.
- On the way up: the cable car takes you from Zermatt up among the glaciers to the highest mountain station in Europe.
- At the top: start with the viewing platform while the view is clear, then visit the Glacier Palace, 15 m below the surface (allow 30 to 45 minutes, and wear warm clothing), and the Cinema Lounge.
- Before coming down: the highest mountain restaurant in Europe is the place to warm up and take in the altitude.
Weather: the factor that decides everything
Neither viewpoint is worth much in thick cloud, and the Matterhorn is famous for gathering its own. A few rules help:
- Go up when you can see the peak from the village. If you can see it from Zermatt, the view from the top will usually be good.
- Mornings are the time to act on a clear sky. If the day starts clear, do not save the viewpoint for the afternoon.
- Build flexibility into your stay. With two or three days in Zermatt, you can wait for the right morning.
- Check each product’s terms. If you book a guided trip or a day tour, read what happens if the weather closes the lifts or hides the view.

It depends on what you want from the day.

Keeping the cost down
Matterhorn viewpoints are not cheap, but there are honest ways to spend less without missing the view.
- Use a Swiss travelcard if you have one. The half-fare card and the GA both give 50% off the Gornergrat railway. If you are spending a week or more travelling by train in Switzerland, a travelcard may already pay for itself before you reach Zermatt.
- Get off before the top. The intermediate Gornergrat stations — Rotenboden (CHF 114 return), Riffelberg (CHF 84) and Riffelalp (CHF 58) — all have the Matterhorn in view and cost less than the full CHF 132 return.
- Buy one way and walk down. On a fine day, a one-way ticket to the summit (CHF 66) and a walk down to a lower station saves money and gives you one of the finest walks in the Alps.
- Choose one viewpoint, not two. Doing both in one day doubles the cost; on a short stay, pick the one that suits you best.
- Skip priority boarding unless you need it. At CHF 7 extra, it is useful on the busiest days or a tight schedule, but not essential.

Doing both in one day
It is possible to visit both viewpoints in a single day, and on a clear day it is tempting. A few things make it work:
- Start early. The first Gornergrat train leaves Zermatt at 07:00 in the summer timetable. Do the Gornergrat first, while the morning light is on the Matterhorn’s faces.
- Come back down and cross the village to the Glacier Paradise cable car for the late morning or early afternoon.
- Keep an eye on the cloud. The Matterhorn can disappear in minutes. If the peak is clear, go up to whichever viewpoint you care about most first.
- Budget for both. The Gornergrat return is CHF 132 on its own; with Glacier Paradise on top, it is an expensive day, so be sure you want both.
For most visitors, one viewpoint on a clear day is more rewarding than two in a rush. If you have two days in Zermatt, give each viewpoint its own morning.
The third option: Sunnegga
The Sunnegga funicular is the third lift from Zermatt, and the shortest ride of the three. It takes you to a lower viewpoint above the village, with its own view of the Matterhorn and access to walks and lakes above Zermatt. It is a good choice for a short outing, a first evening in the village or a day when the higher viewpoints are in cloud.

- Day trips from Geneva and Lausanne. The Geneva trip (about 13 hours) gives free time in Zermatt; the Lausanne tour (about 11.5 hours) offers Glacier Paradise as an option.

Practical tips for the top
- Dress for high altitude. Both viewpoints are far colder and windier than Zermatt. Warm clothing is recommended for the Glacier Palace in particular.
- Protect your eyes and skin. At this altitude, and with snow and ice all around, the sun is strong all year.
- Go up on the clearest morning you have. The weather decides the view, not the ticket.
- Check the timetable for your date, especially at the start and end of the summer season and around the Gornergrat’s November closure.
- Take your time at altitude. Walk slowly, drink water, and come down if you feel unwell.
